so
what
jesus christ garrett’s had a hard life is he not allowed to look scarred
he’s been running and hiding from templars his whole life, he lost his father, he had to flee lothering because of darkspawn, he loses a sibling, he has to leave his homeland and make a whole new home in the slums with his piece of shit uncle, he has to go into the deep roads, loses his other sibling to the darkspawn, the wardens, or the circle mages/templars, he gets into a shitload of trouble with the qunari and the knight-commander, his mother dies, his sibling, if still alive, resents him for saving him/her or not taking him/her with him into the deep roads, and then anders, whom he trusts, blows up a goddamn chantry and starts a fucking revolution.
not to mention the angst relationship drama he has to endure.
IT’S NO FUCKING WONDER HE’S GOT SOME GODDAMN WRINKLES
HE’S GOT A STRESSFUL LIFE
UGH
This confession does make sense within the canon, though; Hawke is established as being 25 in Act I during Legacy, and Gaider confirmed (somewhere, can’t remember for the life of me where) that Anders is 30 in Act I. I can understand the desire for that age difference to show (because Anders certainly looks his age) since Hawke is the younger of the two.
I happen to agree with OP that the devs went a little overboard with making Garrett look “weathered” while Marian looks like she’s been a sheltered hothouse flower her whole life. It’s that difference that puts me off about playing as Garrett, because he does not at all look 25 to me—he looks like he’s older than Leandra in certain lighting. There’s nothing wrong with making him look rugged, but at least make Marian look like she’s had the same stressful life, or make Garrett look unblemished by strife.
/unpopular opinion
not that unpopular
i take little issue with garrett’s face tex because i switched from xbox to max settings pc, and he looks… substantially better. all faces do, really.
but it just further highlights the differences between the two and further pisses me off. i’m 24 and i have more lines on my face (by which i mean the barest hints of lines if i squint and shine really bright light on my skin) than both marian and the new shepard-chan, which is a problem. they’re so afraid to make their female characters in marketing anything less than conventional modelesque beauty, so the character covered in scars, or the character with lines on his face and a broken nose, characters with history become these blank-faced pageant contestants, and it’s just such a disservice to them
i’ve had this argument with bioware before, and way more eloquently, but with the unveiling of shepuchankawaii~~ it seems pertinent
